I read this book inat a time when I never dared dream of writing a complete novel. Brande writes about how to confront your fears and doubts, how to get your mind in a place to be productive, and how to balance your inner editor against your inner creative.

An accomplished stylist in her own right, Brande hits a rhetorical sweet-spot between sympathetic nurturer and uncompromising drill sergeant. But I wish I had come upon it at the very start. Each time she found herself unable to work she was certain she would never repeat her success, and, on first acquaintance, she very nearly persuaded me of it.
Sure, with this book I should’ve gotten to where I am sooner, but thinking back on my journey, I kinda like exploring it on my own terms. The teacher-consultant must form a definite idea of the root of the trouble and give counsel accordingly.
Dorothea Collins died in New Hampshire. I couldn’t bring myself to finish Natalie Goldberg’s “Writing Down the Bones” fromand found Anne Lamott’s “Bird by Bird” from flawed but better; Brande’s manual, however, easily blows them both away.
Brande believed passionately that although people have varying amounts of talent, anyone can write. She also insists that writing can be both taught and learned. Open Preview See a Problem? It may be, again that some notion of waiting for the lightning of inspiration to strike is behind the matter.
A word of warning: References to this book Small-Scale Research: I read Brande a long time ago. It would have saved me a lot of trouble, both in reading those other books and writing my own.
A sound, practical, inspirational and charming approach to writing, it fulfills on finding “the writer’s magic. It’s just a question of finding the “writer’s magic”–a degree of which is in us all. After reading it, you will know how to engage your creative side, how and when to call upon that internal editor. If that moment has already passed, worry not. There is not much to be said for the recommendation, so often heard, to serve an apprenticeship to journalism if you intend to write fiction.
The excellence or ultimate worth of what you write is of no importance yet.

I would not hesitate to take writing advice from Dorothea Brande, for the simple reason that her own writing is so elegant and clear.
Now all you need to concern yourself with is the mere performance of the exercise. How many times have I heard th I read this classic, first published inthinking it might be able to help me write well.
