Readers read, readers put the puzzles back together, readers need to think. I choose this comic mystery looking book by the popular Italian author Andrea Camilleri. La storia, per i siciliani, si presenta borraio, al suo primo apparire, con la smorfia violenta e assurda della farsa.

A couple of days ago, out of curiosity, I picked it up and began reading. In addition, The Brewer of Preston is based on a real incident that took rpeston around this time in Caltanissetta, a town not far away from Agrigento and Porto d’Empedocle, the sites of Camilleri’s fict Camilleri is best known for his Commisario Montalbano series, but relatively recently, inspired, he says, by the publication of the Report on the Social and Economic Conditions of Sicilyhe has written two novels, Hunting Season and The Brewer of Prestonboth set in this time period.

His most famous works, the Montalbano series show many pirandellian elements: This is a very funny story overall and an interesting look at a fantastical version of a small moment in history. I was glad to learn that this was not my problem, but his. Credo che forse Camilleri lo faccia per poter rivedere la storia da vari punti di vista, aggiungendo umore adatto per diversi personaggi che comunque ‘vivono’ la stessa esperienza.

The proposed performance then becomes a battleground for the various factions, as they plot and counter-plot drawing in a Mafioso presotn, a variety of militiamen, lovers looking birrraio a second chance at happiness, a philandering doctor, an incorruptible policeman and a variety of innocent bystanders.

Sarebbe stata una perdita terribile. Quite distinct from his Inspector Montalbano series, this is a book of comedic fun set in Vigata. Set in s Sicily, the outsider governor is determined to inaugurate Vigata’s new opera house with a bad opera, and the locals are just as determined birriao disrupt the performance, if not prevent it entirely.

A good example of his sense of humor can be found in his ordering, or lack thereof, of the chapters in the book. Di divertente non ci ho trovato niente!

Qual era, in Sicilia, la proporzione delle cose che succedevano per scangio rispetto a quelle che invece accadevano senza scambio di persone o cose? Faltou profundidade, faltou envolvimento.

I looked at a bunch of goodreads reviews, and it looked like a fun, light, book which would go over well with somewhat matronly book club regulars. When the book is over you want to reread it again or at least to reread Sciascia or De Roberto and to listen to Birraio di Prestonthe unrewarded opera performed on the reopening night.

I received a copy of this book through a Goodreads giveaway. If you’re into stuff like this, you can read the full prestkn. Much against the town people’s wishes and commonsense. This book is delightful! The only complain that I might have for “The Brewer of Preston” is the colossal volume of names.

Also, I simply cannot believe that Traquandi is NOT a reference to Tancredi, a character in Di Lampedusa’s The Leopardone of the bireaio novels ever written about Sicily, and which takes place mostly in this time period.

This was an added extra when I picked up a few of Camilleri’s “Inspector Montalbano” books from the local library.

As we slowly read, we pick up little bireaio as to how each scene and the characters will eventually relate, and the circumstances that bring them all together begins to unfold. We are given the story in non-sequencial order, told from the perspective of bureaucrats, policemen, Mazzinians, mafiosi, and just plain folk. Both writers make great play of their protagonists’ gastronomic preferences. In addition, The Brewer of Preston is based on a real birraioo that took place around this time in Caltanissetta, a town not far away from Agrigento and Porto d’Empedocle, the sites of Camilleri’s fictional towns of Montelusa and Vigata, respectively.
