The book seems to skim over the surface of the matter, but st Summerson’s six radio lectures about architecture is a short read, very easy to follow. But it is a trade off, that one can do for the compactness of the book.

Having established the foundations of classical architecture, in the next two chapters Summerson leads us through a richly illustrated 16th century of classical style and the emergence of Baroque architecture.

Sometimes the author forgets that he’s addressing a non-architectural public, so those college days sitting in an architectural history course definitely came in handy. Summerson had a great gift for explaining difficult things in plain English. Would you like to see more reviews about this item? I read this for my history of architecture course, and despite the eurocentric view, it’s just a fun read if you’re an architecture student who is fond of classical architecture and hearing it be described to you floats your boat.
